"Web Comics in 2003: How New Media Is Transforming Comic Art"
Christian P.J.-C. Hill (April 2003)
(available free by e-mail request)

Executive Summary: "Web comics" are comics that deliberately take advantage of the digital medium, that is, "cyberspace." Conversely, "online comics" are comics that appear on the web, but that use no cyberspace-dependent devices and that would witness no meaningful degradation if they appeared instead as "offline comics" (i.e. printed on paper). A survey of comics on the web reveals that most today qualify as "online comics." Yet, web comics are on the rise. Some web comic pioneers, such as Demian5, Jasen Lex, Cat Garza, and Scott McCloud, have long gone beyond software mastery and gimmickry. Instead, they use technology to enhance the message and aesthetics of their art, as they build upon concepts and features McCloud presented in Reinventing Comics.
