The Story
In late 2002, a group of art students at California State
University-Fullerton thought it would be fun to do a group
24-Hour Comics, based on Scott McCloud's idea. A few months
later, four of these students drove up to visit Scott McCloud
in his hometown. He was extremely kind and supportive, and
agreed to be filmed as he spoke about the origin, rules, and
tips about 24-Hour Comics. On February 15, 2003, at 9:30am,
the event officially started. The participants and their supporters
gathered to watch the exclusive Scott McCloud televised presentation.
At 10am, comic artist, Paul Lee, sounded the kick-off. Late
in the afternoon, UPN 13, a Los Angeles-based TV station announced
it was coming to do a special live report for its 11pm news
cast. Whereas the mood had been peachy and jovial throughout
the day, by 4am, everyone was quiet, focused, and not quite
so happy-go-lucky! Most were busy inking their 24 penciled
pages and looking with angst at their watches! Around 9am,
Steve Lowery, the O.C. Weekly managing editor paid the students
a visit as he interviewed them thoroughly for his newspaper.
At 10am, everyone was too tired to relish the end of this
challenge, but for those who finished, it was a great achievement!
And for everyone, it was a great experience!!
